This amazing photograph is used with the permission of Richard “Dick” Oakes, a noted folk dance teacher, performer and author. We found the photo some years ago on Phantomranch.net, a site dedicated to international folk dancing that is curated by Dick Oakes. While Mr. Oakes wasn’t sure exactly what dance they’re doing in the photo, he told us the picture may have originally belonged to Athan Karras, A Greek-born American dancer, actor and instructor.

Many of these programs also offer an opportunity to do fieldwork. If you’re curious about learning more without entering a formal degree program, The American Folklore Society (AFS) is a great resource.
AFS provides a list of universities in the US and Canada where you can apply for a degree program in folklore. There are also tips for learning more about the programs, including contacting faculty members and administrators directly.
